This is the first in Pearce’s trilogy of the Indian Mutiny, published in 1909 by Stanley Paul & Company.
This was subtitled “A Romance of the Residency in Lucknow” in the original UK publication by Stanley Paul, but was re-subtitled “A Romance of the Defense of Lucknow” for the Canadian edition, published in 1911 by A.C. McClurg & Co. The Canadian edition, available at the Internet Archive, also includes illustrations by H. S. (Harold Saylor) DeLay.
In 2002, Oxford University Press published the Canadian printing, with its subtitle, rather than the original, as part of a retrospective on Raj fiction. In the front matter, they included a list of works by Pearce, taken from his Who’s Who entry, but they printed it in completely the wrong order, suggesting that his children’s fiction was written many years after his adult novels.
